Group in the LIBRARIES whose primary function is coordinating the functions of SAGE.

Previously called PUBLICATIONS REFERENCE FILE (PRF) - Online catalog of publications currently offered for sale by the U.S. SUPERINTENDENT OF DOCUMENTS. It is, in effect, a "documents in print."

SCHOLARLY SOURCES

Scholarly sources are publications written by subject experts for other researchers in the discipline. Scholarly sources include most journals but not the other types of periodicals (magazines and newspapers). Scholary sources are often PEER-REVIEWED or refereed, and generally include a BIBLIOGRAPHY. Compared to popular sources, scholarly sources are generally considered more appropriate for college-level research.

SEARCH 

1. Exhaustive location process carried out by the ACCESS SERVICES staff when a PATRON cannot find a book on the shelf. 2. Process carried out by the MONO/ID section, ACQUISITIONS SERVICES to determine if we have a publication in our collection or on order. Involved are checking SAGE, BIP+, OCLC, and other bibliographic tools. Also, it involves establishing the correct bibliographic entries for a piece.  See also LITERATURE SEARCH.
SEARCH ENGINE 
Any program that locates information in a DATABASE, used primarily to describe a program that searches the INTERNET.

SECURE SOCKETS LAYER (SSL)
A protocol developed by Netscape for securely transmitting documents via the Internet. URLs that require an SSL connection start with https: instead of http:.
SELECTED LATEST WEEKLY 
12 high demand titles where the latest issue received is placed in a cover and special location in the JOURNAL ROOM.
SELECTION 
See COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT.
SELECTOR CODES/NAMES 
Librarians identified by abbreviations and assigned to various subject areas and funds.  These codes are used in ORDER RECORDS in SAGE to compile and produce reports.
SE-LIN LABELS 
White labels bearing the CALL NUMBER, usually on the spine of a book. Se-Lin refers to the brand name of the labeling system.
SENSITIZE 
To prepare an item for the electronic detection system.  Sensitized material will trigger the alarm at the exit.
SERIAL 
Publication which is issued in successive parts at regular or irregular intervals. Serials are usually intended to continue indefinitely.  Examples are annual reports, PERIODICALS, NEWSPAPERS, proceedings, numbered monographic series.
SERIAL RECORD FILE
Separate card catalog located in the JOURNAL ROOM on the second floor, telling which serials the Library owns and their CALL NUMBERS. Pencil notations indicate material that is unbound, and ink or type notations indicate material that is bound. Beginning with 1992, new binding, new receipts, and new titles are not noted on the Serial Record.
SERIAL SET 
Special edition of United States Senate and House journals, reports and documents, grouped in series and numbered consecutively, which Congress orders printed after each congressional session.
SERIALS SECTION
Section of ACQUISITIONS SERVICES which handles most aspects of acquiring periodicals and serials other than Colorado state and U.S. Government titles. This department encumbers orders, approves invoices, maintains SAGE files of receipt of issues or volumes, claims items not received, and prepares periodical issues for shelving. Located in suite 210, MORGAN LIBRARY, second floor, west wing.
SERIES 
Number of separate works issued in succession and usually related to one another in subject or form and issued by the same publisher in a uniform style. Collective title applying to the group as a whole may appear somewhere on the PIECE.  The individual items may or may not be numbered.
SERIES AUTHORITY FILE (SAF) 
Largely replaced by the online AUTHORITY FILE, this continues to be used for older series.  Record of proper forms for series to keep the entries uniform. Also gives information as to whether or not to trace a series, i.e. make added entry in the catalog. File is located in the BIBLIOGRAPHIC CONTROL AND ELECTRONIC SERVICES DEPARTMENT.
SERIES AUTHORITY RECORD WORKSHEET 
Form used for various stages of establishing and/or upgrading a series according to AACR2 cataloging code.
SERIES TITLE PAGE
An added title page bearing the series title proper and usually, though not necessarily, other information about the series (e.g., statement of responsibility, numeric designation, data relating to publication, title of the item within the series).
SERVICE POINTS
Areas in the library where PATRON assistance my be obtained: LOAN/RESERVE DESK, REFERENCE DESK, JOURNAL ROOM (includes MICROTEXTNEWSPAPERS, INTERLIBRARY LOAN, and UNIVERSITY ARCHIVES.
SET
Work complete in two or more volumes. Collection of books forming a unit, as the works of one author issued in uniform style.
SFX
SFX allows you to click on a citation in a database and view a list of services for that item. SFX stands for "special effects." SFX is an electronic service which service which allows you to view the full text of an article online; request delivery of the book; article or document through INTERLIBRARY LOAN SERVICES; check the SAGE Library Catalog to see if CSUL owns the item; check PROSPECTOR to see if another Colorado library owns the item; and search the WEB for the title of an article. SFX also provides CITATION LINKER, which allows you to enter information for an article citation and see if CSUL has electronic access to it.

SHARED CATALOGING
Program by a group of libraries to share the intellectual effort of cataloging by contributing records to a central database, from which each library can draw.
SHEEHY
Common reference to the following work:  Sheehy, Eugene P., Guide to Reference Books. The guide is an annotated bibliography of reference works, classified by subjects.
SHELF LIST
Record, usually a card file, of titles in a library with the entries arranged in the order of the items in the shelves—in other words, in call number order.  This record can be produced from SAGE. Formerly, this record was on catalog cards; now is being eliminated through the Shelf List Reduction Project.
SHELF RESERVE
Reserve materials that cannot be scanned onto ELECTRONIC RESERVE. E.g. entire personal and library books, video tapes, and CD-ROMs.
SHIPPING AND RECEIVING
Section of the FISCAL SERVICES responsible for mail collection and distribution, including receipts and shipments of all mail and freight and the mailing of all INTERLIBRARY LOAN materials.
SHOP ON SAGE (S.O.S.)
A utility available on the text and Web versions of SAGE, the Libraries online catalog, allows a user to request materials which are available in the library system (MORGAN, Storage/DEPOSITORY, and the 2 BRANCH LIBRARIES) or which are checked out.  Available items are retrieved on a Monday – Friday schedule and RECALLS are placed on items which are checked out.
SHORT-TERM DISABILITY (STD)
Short-term disability insurance is an added benefit for all STATE CLASSIFIED employees. The program is 100% employer paid and benefits are payable for disabilities occurring due to accident or sickness occurring either on or off the job.  The amount of STD benefit is 60% of an employee's pre-disability earnings.
SIDNEY HEITMAN GERMANS FROM RUSSIA COLLECTION
Published material and oral history tapes deriving from a History Department project on Germans from Russia in Colorado. Many items are uncataloged.  An inventory is available.  Housed in UNIVERSITY ARCHIVES.
SILVER PLATTER
A database vendor. Includes databases in the sciences and social sciences.

SINGLE TITLE CONTINUATION
Set that comes out in part over a period of time with a definite end in view. ACQUISITIONS SERVICES places a STANDING ORDER for the set; term is used for processing purposes.

SPINE TITLE
A title appearing on the spine of an item.
SSL
Short for SECURE SOCKETS LAYER.
STACKS
Shelves on which library materials are arranged. This is primarily an "OPEN STACKS" library, in which readers have direct access to the shelves. Also known as a section in the PRESERVATION SERVICES responsible for maintenance of STACKS, and the shelving of Library materials. 
STANDARD NUMBER
The INTERNATIONAL STANDARD BOOK NUMBER (ISBN), INTERNATIONAL STANDARD SERIAL NUMBER (ISSN), or any other internationally agreed upon standard number that identifies an item uniquely.
STANDING ORDER (STO)
General direction to a publisher to supply future issues of a continuing title until otherwise notified.
STATE BOARD OF AGRICULTURE (SBA)
Board (Board of Governors of the Colorado State University System) appointed by the governor as the governing body of Colorado State University as well as the University of Southern Colorado. State Board of Agriculture records from 1879 on are located in the UNIVERSITY ARCHIVES.

STATE CLASSIFIED
All permanent University employees not included in the academic faculty or ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONAL staff are in the STATE CLASSIFIED personnel system.
STATE DOCUMENTS
Books, periodicals and other materials originating in, or bearing the imprint of, an office or agency of a state government.
STATE UNIT EQUIVALENT
Statistics that the ASSISTANT DEAN FOR TECHNICAL SERVICES compiles for the University at the end of each fiscal year based on the number of units and expenditures for MONOGRAPHS and SERIALS reported by ACQUISITIONS SERVICES. BINDING costs are also factored into the final figure.  Originally, definitions for these units were derived by a state-wide committee for the CCHE to compare libraries operated with state funds.   However, the figures are not reported to the CCHE any longer but are used to project costs for budgets.
STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITY
A statement relating to persons responsible for the intellectual or artistic content of the item, to corporate bodies from which the content emanates, or to persons or corporate bodies responsible for the performance of the content of the item.
STATUS CODES
Codes used in the online catalog defined by the Library to have particular meanings; e.g., status codes may indicate if a book is checked out, lost, being bound, etc.

STICKY WICKET
File kept at the REFERENCE DESK and the JOURNAL ROOM assistance desk giving answers to difficult and/or recurring questions; is maintained by members of REFERENCE SERVICES.
STO

STOP WORD/STOP LIST
Also "noise word". Words not indexed in the computer system due to too many entries or lack of meaning. (e. g., and, or, the).
STORAGE (LAKE STREET DEPOSITORY)
Building for the storage of lesser-used library materials outside of the MORGAN LIBRARY on Lake Stree. See also DEPOSITORY; REMOTE STORAGE
STUDY PRIVILEGE
STATE CLASSIFIED employees and general faculty employees have the privilege of registering for up to 6 credits per academic year at no charge.

SUBJECT HEADING

Word or phrase indicating the subject under which all material dealing with the same topic is entered in a CATALOG or bibliography or arranged in a file. The CSU Library uses LIBRARY OF CONGRESS subject headings--(LCSH).
SUBJECT LIBRARIAN
Librarian designated to do COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT for an academic department or program. See also MATERIAL SELECTOR.

SUBJECT SUBDIVISION
Restrictive word or phrase added to a SUBJECT HEADING to limit it to a more specific meaning.
SUBTITLE
Secondary or explanatory title.
SUDOCS
Abbreviation referring to the U.S. Government SUPERINTENDENT OF DOCUMENTS, the federal government printer. Classification designation for government documents is called the SuDOC number.

SUCCESSIVE TITLE
Type of serials cataloging in which the previous title entry is closed, and complete new descriptive cataloging is done for the new title. Successive title cataloging occurs when a serial changes its title.
SUGGESTION BOX
Receptacle for deposit of suggestions from PATRONs are located throughout the Libraries at SERVICE POINTS and on the Comment Box of SAGE. Responses to electronic suggestions made on SAGE are posted online. Suggestions are answered and posted online and at service points by the COORDINATOR OF INFORMATION/REFERENCE

SUPERINTENDENT OF DOCUMENTS (SUDOC) CLASSIFICATION
System of classification developed by the LIBRARY OF CONGRESS for its collections. It has a notation of letters and figures that uniquely identifies publications issued by the United States Government. CSUL uses this classification system.

SUPERSEDE
To take the place of; replace.
SUPPLEMENT (SUPPL)
Complementary part of a book or article, which adds information to, or continues the text of the original. Supplement often refers to additional issues of a journal, which may or may not be distributed as part of the journal subscription. Some supplements require a separate subscription.
SUSPENDED PUBLICATION
SERIAL publication not currently being published, but which has not formally ceased publication or merged with another title. Publisher intends to resume publication at a later date.
