RARE BOOKS
Printed material that because of age, limited number of copies printed or unusual circumstances is considered valuable.  Rare books do not circulate.  Rare books are located in UNIVERSITY ARCHIVES, Suite 202, and may be used in the department.

RECALL
Request by the ACCESS SERVICES staff for the return of a borrowed book when another patron needs it.  See REQUEST.
RECLASSIFYING
Revision of a CALL NUMBER due to a change in the CLASSIFICATION SCHEDULES or an error in the cataloging when the CALL NUMBER was first assigned.
RECON
Retrospective conversion of manual cataloging records to machine-readable format.
RECORD SUPPRESSION
The ability to remove a record from public view, while keeping that record in SAGE, e.g., records for withdrawn books remain in the online catalog for a period of time, but cannot be viewed by the public.
RECORDS MANAGEMENT
Organizational control of institutional records managed by the University Archivist.
RECTO
Right-hand page of an open book, usually bearing the odd page number.
REF
Location symbol used in CALL NUMBERS of materials in GENERAL REFERENCE area.
REFERENCE AREA

This area contains atlases, guidebooks, bibliographies, directories, dictionaries and other information sources.  The location symbol for these materials is REF.

REFERENCE DESK COLLECTION
Formerly known as "Ready Reference Collection" or "Ready Ref". Reference books used frequently by staff and/or patrons, shelved at the REFERENCE DESK. Wooden DUMMIES on the regular reference shelves indicate where the books are shelved.
REFERENCE SERVICES
A service area in the PUBLIC SERVICES DIVISION which includes the following groups:  INSTRUCTION; COLLECTION MANAGEMENT; and INFORMATION AND REFERENCE

Public service point staffed by the REFERENCE SERVICES department.

REFERENCE TRANSACTION

A reference transaction is an information contact that involves the knowledge, use, recommendations, interpretation, or instruction in the use of one or more information sources by a member of the library staff. The term includes information and referral service. Information sources include (a) printed and nonprinted material; (b) machine-readable databases (including computer-assisted instruction); (c) the library's own catalogs and other holdings records; (d) other libraries and institutions through communication or referral; and (e) persons both inside and outside the library.

REINSTATEMENT

A SERIAL title which was dead is reactivated.
REMOTE ASSISTANCE PHONES
Phones available at remote locations ring directly to the Libraries' LOAN/RESERVE DESK on the first floor. Each phone location has been given a Colorado Ghost Town name. Patrons may use phones to request assistance.

REMOTE STORAGE
Building for the storage of lesser-used library materials outside of the MORGAN LIBRARY on Lake Street. See also DEPOSITORY; STORAGE.
REMOTE USERS
Distance Users are those members of the CSU community (faculty, staff and students) who are accessing library resources from a distance whether enrolled in a distance learning program or not.
REPAIR FLAG
A flag placed in a BOOK or SERIAL issue indicating the item or piece needs repair; to be sent to PRESERVATION .
REPAIRS
Section within PRESERVATION SERVICES that has charge of mending materials for which rebinding is not necessary. Also known as the PRESERVATION LAB
REPLACEMENT FUND
Officially called the Lost and Damaged Library Books Fund. This is an account used primarily to replace books, photocopy missing pages in books and journals, and aid in PRESERVATION of materials.
REPRINT
1. Reimpression (intact) of material that has been published before.
2. Contribution to a periodical, afterwards issued separately, though not necessarily of the same type as the original. Reprints are printed copies prepared by the publisher as opposed to photocopies.

REPOSITORY

A central electronic location created and maintained for depositing research and/or scholarly output deemed appropriate by participating organizations, departments, or units.
REQUEST
An online service on SAGE which allows patrons to request items that are checked out or in storage.  You must establish a PIN number to use this service.   See also RECALL.
REQUESTER CODES/NAMES
Specific  areas or persons designated to be notified when a piece has been cataloged and is available.
RESERVE DESK
Section of ACCESS SERVICES where books selected by faculty for required class reading are segregated and loaned for limited periods.
RESERVE RECALL
Recall used when a book is needed for Reserve.
RESERVES
Books, articles and other materials selected by faculty that are segregated and loaned for limited periods through the RESERVE DESK or accessed through ELECTRONIC RESERVES.
RESUME
A brief account of one's professional or work experience and qualifications, often submitted with a job application.
RETRO ORDER
Retrospective order. The one-time ordering of back issues of a JOURNAL or SERIAL to complete the set.
RETROCON

RETROSPECTIVE CONVERSION
See RECON.
RFP
Request for proposal.  A document used to request bids for specified goods and services.  Responses are evaluated according to specified criteria, not simply by price.
RLG

RLIN
See RESEARCH LIBRARIES INFORMATION NETWORK.
RLIN ILL SUBSYSTEM
This subsystem allows ELECTRONIC MAIL delivery of an INTERLIBRARY LOAN request to member institutions, automatically transferring it to up to six libraries. 
RLO
Responsible Library Officer. By policy, this is the most senior supervisor in ACCESS SERVICES at the time of an emergency, safety or security issue. A master list of RLO names and phone numbers is updated regularly. An RLO is typically the on-site senior person, but guidance/instruction can also come remotely. The Coordinator of ACCESS SERVICES is the chief RLO. The ASSISTANT DEAN for Administrative Services (ADAS), if present or accessible, acts as an adjunct to the RLO.
ROUTING
Systematic circulating of material to staff members.
