OAI-PMH

Short for OAI-Protocol for Metadata Harvesting. This protocol defines a mechanism for harvesting records containing metadata from repositories. The OAI-PMH gives a simple technical option for data providers to make their METADATA available to services, based on the open standards HTTP (Hypertext Transport Protocol) and XML (Extensible Markup Language).

OCLC/FIRSTSEARCH
Comprehensive online remote DATABASE offering over 70 different databases including WorldCat, which has some 49 million records in over 400 languages from over 15,000 libraries worldwide.

Earth Access to FirstSearch is available through the CSU Libraries Databases.

OCLC ILL SUBSYSTEM
Allows ELECTRONIC MAIL delivery of an INTERLIBRARY LOAN request, automatically referring it to up to five libraries. See also ONLINE COMPUTER LIBRARY CENTER.
OCR LABEL
Optical Character Recognition.  A numeral read by light pen to uniquely identify items. Used by the ACCESS SERVICES staff to identify units of library materials. 
OIS
Office of Instructional Services at CSU.   The University-wide organization responsible for providing media support for instruction, outreach, and other purposes for faculty, staff, and graduate teaching assistants.
ONLINE
Used in conjunction with computer databases; generally means that the user is in direct contact with the database and can interact with it, usually through a computer terminal. Often used to distinguish remote databases such as those on SAGE, as opposed to CD-ROM locally loaded databases.
ONLINE CIRCULATION SYSTEM
System which inputs checkout and discharges of library materials directly into a computer without manual intervention.
ONLINE COMPUTER LIBRARY CENTER (OCLC)
Computerized library service and research organization based in Ohio. The Center operates an international network that libraries use to acquire and catalog books, order custom-printed catalog cards, arrange interlibrary loans, and maintain location information on library materials. Formerly called Ohio College Library Center. CSUL is a member and uses their database for cataloging.

ONLINE PUBLIC ACCESS CATALOG
COMPUTER TERMINALS used by patrons to access the Libraries' online catalog (SAGE) and the online DATABASES the Libraries subscribes to. Also: OPAC, PAC.
ON THE FLY
Creating a new “MINI” BIB RECORD when checking out a book that has a barcode not found in the system.  This enables the patron to check out the book.  Also called CIRCULATION ON THE FLY.

OPEN ARCHIVES INITIATIVE (OAI)

OAI is an initiative to develop and promote interoperability standards that aim to facilitate the efficient dissemination of content. The approach of open archives is to enable access to Web-accessible material through interoperable repositories for METADATA sharing, publishing and archiving and arose out of the need for a low-barrier interoperability solution.

OPEN ENTRY

Catalog entry for a SERIAL, series, or set not yet completed. Volume number and date are incomplete on the serials record.
OPEN FORUM
Monthly meeting of all Libraries staff with the DEAN of the Libraries.  The final half hour is usually reserved for the DEAN meeting with CLASSIFIED STAFF.
OPEN STACKS

Shelves of Library materials to which patrons have access for self-service retrieval.

OPENURL

The OpenURL standard, first developed by Oren Beit-Arie, of Ex Libris, and Herbert Van de Sompel, is a protocol for interoperability between an information resource and a service component, referred to as a link server, which offers localized services. The underlying concept of the OpenURL standard is that links should lead a user to appropriate resources.

ORACLE TIME CLOCK

Colorado State University centralized timeclock system used to record hourly employees' time; system requires employees' supervisor approval before time is paid by the University.
ORDER
1. Request to a publisher or VENDOR to purchase a publication, supplies, or services.
2. The act of preparing an order.
ORDER CARD
Card used to request that publications be ordered; used by the librarians and/or faculty and students. Additional information on requested title is added by the MONO/ID section of the ACQUISITION SERVICES.
ORDER PACKET
Set of processing slips prepared by ACQUISITIONS SERVICES, MONO/ID section, or the SERIALS section with appropriate bibliographic information which is used for ordering and/or cataloging.
ORDER RECORD
When a new MONOGRAPH or SERIAL is purchased, ACQUISITIONS SERVICES staff enter an order record into the acquisitions subsystem of INNOPAC, and "On Order" is displayed in SAGE until the book is received.
OUT-OF-PRINT SEARCHING
Attempting to purchase used copies of materials that are out-of-print through special used book dealers.
OVERSZ
LOCATION CODE for Oversized Materials.
OVID
DATABASE VENDOR specializing in science, technology and medical information.

Earth Access to OVID is available through the CSU Libraries Databases.
