M2's
ACCESS SERVICES MONITORS who have been promoted to a second level Monitor position. M2's are members of the department's managerial team and perform duties of greater scope. Oversight/supervision is one major assignment and another is special projects. One may find M2's diagramming floorplans, revising emergency procedure manuals, coordinating other MONITORS and students, etc.
MACHINE READABLE CATALOGING (MARC)
Conversion of printed material into a format that can be stored in a computer for access and display upon a computer terminal. See also MARC format.
MAF
See MANUAL AUTHORITY FILE.
MAGAZINE
A PERIODICAL containing a collection of articles, stories, pictures, or other features.
MAILROOM
Located in MORGAN LIBRARY, 1st floor, south west wing.  Main location of shipping and handling of incoming and outgoing Library mail.
MAIN ENTRY
The primary access point to a bibliographic record, usually a personal name (i.e. the author of the work).
MAJOR DONOR RECOGNITION WALL
Located in the front entryway of MORGAN LIBRARY, represents donors of the Libraries that have given $10,000 or more to the PROMISE FUFILLED” Campaign.
MANTA
Library staff accounts and Libraries network is housed on this computer server.
MANUAL AUTHORITY FILE (MAF)
Largely replaced by online AUTHORITY RECORDS, in the past these  files were established to record the proper form of entry for a name. The file is divided into three sections:  1. personal names; 2. corporate and geographic names; and 3. uniform titles. The file originated with the Title IIC project, and later expanded to include authority records established by the BIBLIOGRAPHIC CONTROL AND ELECTRONIC SERVICES DEPARTMENT. Manual authority file includes information on cross references and the history of a name, and the cataloging code under which the name was established.  The corporate and geographic file remains in card form, replaced in part and updated by the online AUTHORITY FILE.
MANUSCRIPT
Writing made by hand, including one made by typewriter or personal computer.
MANUSCRIPT COLLECTIONS
UNIVERSITY ARCHIVES has a number of manuscript collections on a variety of subjects. For a list, see the most recent edition of "A Guide to Manuscripts at Colorado State University," Libraries Publication no. 24.
MAP
Location symbol indicating the map collection, shelved in MORGAN LIBRARY, 1st floor, south wing.
MAP COLLECTION
The map collection at CSUL includes maps and atlases published by the U.S. government and private publishers, U.S. Geological Survey quadrangle maps and maps for all areas of the world, including thematic maps such as soils or vegetation. Located in MORGAN LIBRARY, 1st floor, south wing.
MARC [RECORD] FORMAT
MAchine-Readable Cataloging format. A format developed at the LIBRARY OF CONGRESS to record cataloging data in machine-readable form. MARC format uses fields, indicators, and subfield codes to identify cataloging data explicitly for computer manipulation.
MARCIVE
Company that provides shipping list services and BIB RECORDS for DEPOSITORY items.
MARKING

Process of attaching a CALL NUMBER to the PIECE, security taping, and property stamping; also called preparations.  Section of PRESERVATION SERVICES responsible for preparing materials for shelving.
MATERIAL SELECTOR (subject selector)
Librarian designated to do COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT for an academic department or program. See also SUBJECT SELECTOR.

MATERIALS BUDGET
Funds allocated for the purchase and maintenance of print SERIALS and MONOGRAPHS, as well as electronic resources.
McBEE CARD
Manual key sort charge card used to check out materials not entered on the online circulation system i.e., unbound periodicals.
MEETING ROOMS
Rooms in the library available for meetings. Library staff employee meetings are scheduled internally.
MEMBER COPY
A BIBLIOGRAPHIC RECORD cataloged and/or input by a library other than the LIBRARY OF CONGRESS where the cataloging library is a member of OCLC.
MEMBER LIBRARY CATALOGING
Cataloging information provided by a library that is a member of a network or cooperative program. In our case, it is from OCLC.
MENDS
Books to be repaired.
MESSAGE
See also TATTLE TAPE.  Signal on the book for the electronic detection system. 
MESSAGE STONE
A campaign to increase the MORGAN LIBRARY ENDOWMENT.  Personal messages are carved on stones which are placed in the walls of the Library foyer.  Donors of $250 or more have their message carved in a 9"x 9" stone.
METADATA
DATA about DATA. Metadata describes how and when and by whom a particular set of DATA was collected, and how the DATA is formatted.
METALIB
A cross-database searching tool. It allows you to search up to eight DATABASES and catalogs at once; create a personalized resource list; and save, email and download search results. MetaLib software was created by the Ex Libris group.

METS

Metadata Encoding & Transmission Standard. The METS schema is a standard for encoding descriptive, administrative, and structural METADATA regarding objects within a digital library, expressed using an XML schema language of the WORLD WIDE WEB CONSORTIUM.

MICROCARD
Opaque card on which microcopies have been reproduced photographically, arranged in rows.
MICROFICHE
Transparent MICROFORM on a single sheet, approximately 4 x 6 inches. 
MICROFILM
Film bearing a record of reduced scale. It may be negative or positive and 16, 35, or 70mm wide and any length, depending on the number of exposures.
MICROFORM
An arrangement of images that have been reduced in size; generic format of all types of microfilmed material.
MICROFORM READER
Machine used to enlarge MICROFORMS through a lens or prism and display them on a screen. READER-PRINTERS allow for a full size hard copy to be made of the image displayed.
MICROTEXT
Located in JOURNAL ROOM, MORGAN LIBRARY, 2nd floor, west wing.  Houses MICROFORM READERS and READER-PRINTERS and includes MICROCARDS, MICROFICHE, and MICROFILM
MICROSOFT OFFICE SUITE
This suite of productivity software includes, Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint, Frontpage, and Outlook.
MICROSOFT WORD
Word processing application software that includes spelling and grammar checks. Available for public use in the Morgan Library Computer Lab.
MICROSOFT WINDOWS
A family of operating systems for personal computers. Windows dominates the personal computer world, running, by some estimates, on 90% of all personal computers. The remaining 10% are mostly Macintosh computers. Like the Macintosh operating environment, Windows provides a GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE (GUI), virtual memory management, multitasking, and support for many peripheral devices.
MINI BIB
A brief BIBLIOGRAPHIC RECORD for staff use.
MINOR'S CARD
Borrowing card issued to library users junior high school age through the age of 17. 
MLS/MLIS
Master of Library Science degree.  The terminal degree for the profession of library science.
MOCAT
See MONTHLY CATALOG.
MODEM CONNECTION
A modem is a device or program that enables a computer to transmit data over, for example, telephone or cable lines. The Libraries' has two active telephone lines available for patron's, located in the area just west of the EIC.
MONITORS
ACCESS SERVICES student employees who have been promoted into a managerial role. Monitors manage the LOAN & RESERVE desk during the hours the building is open. Monitors also assist with STACKS responsibilities. Typically, ACCESS SERVICES employees at least 7 Monitors at any given time.
MONO/ID

MONOGRAPH
A piece of scholarly writing of essay or BOOK length on a specific, often limited subject, work, collection, or other writing that is not a SERIAL.
MONOGRAPHS AND IDENTIFICATION
Section of ACQUISITIONS SERVICES responsible for searching, acquiring and receiving monographs.
MONOGRAPHIC SERIES
Number of separate works issued in succession which have a collective title and are normally issued by the same publisher in a uniform style.
MONTHLY CATALOG (MOCAT)
Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Publications. A periodical indexing by author, title and subject federal documents published by the SUPERINTENDENT OF DOCUMENTS in Washington, D.C.  Also accessible on CD-ROM.
MORGAN, DR. WILLIAM E.
Former President of the University (1949-1969) and the Library's namesake. The sculpture on the pedestal in the entryway is of Dr. Morgan.
MORGAN LIBRARY
Official name of the building which houses the CSU Libraries on the main campus.  Named after Colorado State University’s  8th  president, WILLIAM E. MORGAN.  See also ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCE BRANCH LIBRARY and the Veterinary Medical Center Library.
MORGAN LIBRARY ENDOWMENT
Part of the " A PROMISE FULFILLED" CAMPAIGN, this ENDOWMENT was created to fund Library initiatives that are not funded by the State.  The accumulated interest from this ENDOWMENT is spent on special projects each year.  The ENDOWMENT is a key development goal in that the balance must increase substantially each year.
MOVABLE SHELVES
Electronically operated compact storage shelving; housed in MORGAN LIBRARY Lower Level (basement), south wing; location for BOUND JOURNALS.
MPLA
Mountain Plains Library Association.  Its mission is to further the development of librarians, library employees and trustees and to promote quality library service in the states of the Mountain Plains Region (Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming.)
