FASCICLE
1. Portion of a work which, for convenience of publishing or printing, is issued in small installments. It is distinguished from a PART by being a temporary portion of a unit rather than a complete unit. 
2. One of the parts of a book published in separate sections. Also called fascicule
FAX
1. Short for Facsimile machine.  
2. To send a document via a fax machine.
3. A document that has been sent, or is about to be sent, via a fax machine.

FEDERATED SEARCHING TOOL

Also known as "cross-database search tool." A software solution that can search library catalogs as well as commercial abstracting and indexing databases, web search engines, and a variety of other databases, often capable of merging and de-duplicating (a.k.a. de-duping) results. See also METALIB.

FICHE

Another name for MICROFICHE.
FINANCIAL REPORTING SYSTEM (FRS)
The University's central accounting system.  The Library's INNOPAC System interfaces with the system to pay invoices for materials.
FINDING AID
Guide, CATALOG, or index to non-current records. Finding aids, many computerized, are available to most of the non-classified archives held by the UNIVERSITY ARCHIVES.
FIRM ORDER
Order which MONOGRAPH or SERIALS staff in ACQUISITIONS place for a title new to the libraries or an additional copy. "Firm" implies that the library has made a commitment to the supplier to purchase the item.
FIRST NATIONAL BANK GALLERY
Libraries Art gallery located on the 1st floor, just east of the library entrance.
FIRSTSEARCH (OCLC)
Comprehensive online remote DATABASE offering over 70 different databases including WorldCat, which has some 49 million records in over 400 languages from over 15,000 libraries worldwide.

Earth Access to FirstSearch is available through the CSU Libraries Databases.

FISCAL SERVICES
Also known as ACCOUNTING SERVICES.  Office in ADMINISTRATION SERVICES which is responsible for monitoring budgets and expenditures and maintaining financial records and overseeing the Libraries SHIPPING AND RECEIVING.
FISCAL YEAR
Budget year running from July 1 to June 30. The Libraries is allotted state-appropriated funds which must be totally spent within the current fiscal year.
FIXED FIELDS
Areas within the BIBLIOGRAPHIC, ORDER, ITEM, CHECK-IN, and PATRON RECORDS which contain coded information, with contents always validated by the system, are not repeatable, and with placement or order within the record; cannot be changed.
FLAGGING
Goldenrod and pink colored flags used to identify an item with destination within MORGAN LIBRARY and the BRANCH LIBRARIES.  Also used to identify it as related to already cataloged items as a different edition, related, similar, ADDED COPY or VOLUME.  Also used to note an ERRATA, detachable materials, need of repair or BINDING, and format.
FLOPPY DISK
A flexible plastic disk coated with magnetic material and covered by a protective jacket, used primarily by computers to store data
magnetically. Also called diskette. Diskettes are received with some SERIALS issues; retained at the LOAN DESK; also received with some MONOGRAPHS.
FOLIO
Oversize mark of a book or bound PERIODICAL. In this library, the word "OVERSIZED" is used.
FORM SELECTION SLIP
Preprinted forms from book vendors such as Blackwell North America and Yankee which are sent to the CSUL to announce new titles.
FREEBIES
Items offered to CSUL patrons free of charge.  This includes items received as gifts which are not added to the collection or items that have been withdrawn.
FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA)
Law enacted by Congress in 1976 that provides for public access to the records of federal executive agencies, with certain exceptions.

FRONT OFFICE
Common designation for the Administrative Office, which includes the administrative assistants to the DEAN, the ASSISTANT DEANS, and the DEVELOPMENT SERVICES, FISCAL SERVICES, and LIBRARIES PERSONNEL .
FRS
See FINANCIAL REPORTING SYSTEM.
FTE
Full Time Equivalent. A term used for budgeting purposes to designate the number of staff allocated to each state department. One FTE is a full time professional or classified staff member working for one month.  In the computation of hourly employees, one FTE is 173.4 hours worked.
FTP
File Transfer Protocol, the protocol used on the INTERNET for sending files.
FULL SERVICE
All PUBLIC SERVICES and TECHNICAL SERVICES departments are in operation with normal staffing.

FULL-TEXT

Articles, books, documents, pamphlets and texts that can be displayed in their entirety on a computer terminal. In some instances, full
graphical display is included as well. The full text designation is given anytime the majority of the content within a given database is
available in its entirety. See also DATABASE and CITATION LINKER.

FUND CODES

COLLECTION MANAGEMENT, ACQUISITIONS, and ACCOUNTING staff use five-character codes to identify conveniently the large number of fund accounts within the MATERIALS BUDGET. The INNOPAC Acquisitions System recognizes these codes in the Fund Field and will not accept invalid codes. Each subject area has a fund code. Subject funds are further subdivided by type.
