Step 1: Select an Index

An index contains bibliographic citations to journal articles. Indexes can be searched by subject, author, and, depending on the software used to access a computerized database, title, keyword, etc. Indexes are mostly computerized; however, some indexes are available only in printed format, and many computerized indexes cover only the last few years with a printed version covering earlier years. Some topics may need to be almost exclusively researched in print indexes. Start by selecting the most appropriate index(es) for your topic or subject area.

  • A. Ask Information Desk staff to recommend the index(es) that will be the most useful to you (there will probably be more than one; you may be referred to a College Liaison [Reference] Librarian for complex topics). You can also find recommendations for various subjects in Research Guides, written by College Liaison librarians.
  • B. To find the list of indexes that cover up-to-date information, click here.
  • C. Many indexes at CSU are available via the "Research Databases" page. image of "Research Databases" link from Library's home page See which ones to use by subject using the drop down menu.image of subject drop down menu on Research Databases page
