Almanacs

A basic almanac has generally useful information. It contains some statistics, some background, and some history. When all that is needed is a quick piece of information, an almanac can frequently provide it.

For example, a basic almanac has the names of:
  • U.S. Presidents,
  • Governors of states,
  • Mayors of major cities,
  • winners of major sports events and
  • winners of literary prizes.
It also has a copy of the:
  • U.S. Constitution,
  • Bill of Rights, and
  • Amendments to the Constitution.

In addition, a basic almanac has brief summary information about countries around the world, such as form of government, population, capital, and monetary unit. Keep in mind, that because almanacs are updated annually, there may be some outdated information (e.g. government officials may change). Two useful almanacs are:

  • The Time Almanac with Information Please. AY 64 .I55 (year) REF DESK also online.
  • World Almanac & Book of Facts. AY 67 .N5 W7 (year) REF DESK
